Did you know that a recent study found that one in five purchasers of a new iPad claimed that they were going to utilize it in the work place?Do you use a smartphone or a tablet for your work? did you have to purchase it yourself? If you said yes to both of these questions, you have participated in a Bring Your Own Device program. These are programs used in workplaces that rely heavily on the use of next generation technology but that have not developed the means to get it to the employees themselves. While this may be a quick way for a company that wants to move into the future but also wants to save money, here are some of the top reasons that this could backfire.
1. The number one problem facing companies that have instituted a bring your own device model is the lack of iphone security. If they were to provide their employees with the devices, they would a larger measure of control over the security and the ways in which the iphone security was implemented.
2. By requiring their employees to purchase or bring their own device, the lose the ability to take place in mobile device management. If the device belongs to the employee and not the company, the business has no ability to manage the ways in which the devices are used. This can lead the a lesser degree of iphone security by sacrificing iphone management and as a result, a lesser degree of security for the information that is important to the company.
3. Byod business models are also forced to rely almost exclusively on the use of cloud storage as a result of the difficulty in interfacing that many devices. While the cloud may seem like the ideal solution to all the problems of information storage, security and access to that information from offsite is also an issue. There are some solutions to this problem, like SaaS and onsite master device management however.
4. Though some companies cover some of the costs of BYOD programs, 50 percent require the employees to cover all the technology costs. Though most of the people are compliant, forcing the workforce of a company to spend their own devices that are required is not a good way to build inter office relationships and trust.
my boss made me buy an ipad for my job. it cost me over 500 dollars that i did not have and he didnt even help at all. i need to make student loan payments with that money. he does not pay me enough for this kind of thing.
I had a similar experience. I had to purchase an iphone and the plan that comes with it for my job. the reason I didnt have one before is because I couldn’t afford it because my boss didn’t pay me enough. this is completely ridiculous.
